A chance question between two friends started a ball rolling that will culminate with this weekend’s “A Salute to Strong Women,” a benefit for breast cancer research, at Lafayette Society for Performing Arts.

Terri Codlin, a board member and fundraising committee member of LSPA, was chatting recently with Carol Cain, who is directing the Lafayette Theater Company’s production of “Steel Magnolias” in November. Codlin was trying to organize a fundraiser that could be tied to the show, when Cain asked her a question, seemingly off topic.

“Does LSPA ever rent out the black box theater for fundraisers?” she asked.

“Not often,” Codlin replied. “We are very limited in how much we can raise through non-arts events. Why?”

Cain explained that she and her sister, Wanda Lowe, will be participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk coming up in Atlanta in October. Cain is participating in the walk with – and in honor of – Lowe, who is a breast cancer survivor. They have been trying to come up with fundraising ideas to raise money for the walk. They had a plan, but needed a place.

Bingo! A solution.

LSPA will host “A Salute to Strong Women” at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the black box theater at 214 Bull St.

The event will feature Cain, who will share stories about strong and valiant women; singers Anna Howington and Katie Cain, finalists in the West Georgia Idol contest; and the cast of Lafayette Theater Company’s upcoming production of “Steel Magnolias.”

Cain will premiere a new story that she wrote about her sister’s battle with breast cancer.

A gift boutique will be available in the lobby.

Guests were invited to gather their friends and pack up food and beverages of their choice. Doors open at 6 p.m. for dinner, and the program will follow.

Tickets are $20, with a portion of the proceeds going to breast cancer research.

This event is not limited to women.

“We want to make sure that men know they are welcome, too,” said Debby Durrence, LSPA president. “I’m sure there are quite a few men out there who have been influenced and inspired by the strong women in their lives. How great would it be to see men escort those special women to this event?”

Call LSPA at (706) 880-9909 to reserve tickets.
