I shopped in my favorite grocery store the other day – spent $28, had $25. Have you ever done that, then stood there embarrassed and stupid? You either return a few items, or leave the cart and drive home to get money or your checkbook.
In my case, the customer next in line behind me, a total stranger, told the checkout girl to put the $3 on his tab. I thanked him the best I could, patted him on the shoulder, stammered and told him he was a good man. I asked his name, but he wouldn’t say, relieving me of repayment or any further obligation.
I told him I would pass it on, by doing something kind or useful for another person. He was pleased with that. The whole event reminded me of the movie “Pay It Forward.”
On the other hand, maybe he thought it was worth three bucks to get me out of the way. Just kidding.
