It’s been a short turnaround for the Callaway Cavaliers.

After dispatching B.E.S.T. Academy 35-6 on Saturday, the Cavaliers will be back on the field today for another Region 4-AAA game, this time against Douglass.

Because of the Saturday to Thursday turnaround, Callaway has had just five days between games instead of the normal seven days.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Callaway Stadium.

“This will be the first time that I’ve played on a Saturday and turned around played on Thursday,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said.

Wiggins said the players have done a nice job of adjusting to the short week, though.

“Our kids have handled it well,” Wiggins said. “We had good practices this week. They were less physical than normal. Again, the kids practiced really hard, and I was pleased with our effort this whole week.”

The Cavaliers come into the game on a roll.

Callaway (7-1 overall, 5-0 in Region 4-AAA) has won seven consecutive games, including five in a row in region play.

If the Cavaliers win today, they’ll sew up the region’s top seed for the upcoming state playoffs, meaning they’d be at home for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.

“It’s the next game for us,” Wiggins said. “We’ve got to go out and execute and keep our focus. And that’s what we plan to do. So it’ll be a big game (tonight), and I know it’ll be a great atmosphere and our kids are looking forward to it.”

While Callaway has been red-hot and is the class of the region, it’s been a long year for Douglass.

The Astros are 1-7 overall, and they fell to 0-5 in the region after losing to Rockmart 54-12 last week.

Douglass has at least won a game this season, something it didn’t do last year while going 0-10.

Callaway will wrap up the regular season on Nov. 9 with a home game against Rockmart before hosting a state-playoff game the following week.
