The passenger in an SUV that hit the corner of a local convenience store said the brakes were failing as they were heading north into LaGrange on Friday afternoon.
Iesha and Sharon Murphy, both of West Point, were the driver and passenger in a Ford Escape heading north on West Point Road just before 1 p.m. Sharon Murphy said Iesha Murphy “kept mashing” the brakes as they approached the intersection with Lukken Industrial Drive, but nothing happened. The two pulled in to the Chevron on the corner and the vehicle didn’t stop until it had crashed into the southwest corner of the building.
“We just heard a boom,” said Anthony Smith, one of three employees inside the store at the time. Smith said he heard a sound like grinding brakes before the car hit the building, and was headed out to help the two women inspect the vehicle when it crashed.
The SUV broke through the concrete facade and cracked the drywall inside the store. Part of the vehicle’s bumper could be seen through a hole the crash left in the wall.
No one was injured inside the building, but Iesha Murphy had an injured wrist and planned to visit the hospital this afternoon. Employees of the store provided ice while the Troup County Fire Department and Troup County Sheriff’s office worked the scene.
The Georgia State Patrol was expected to investigate the crash.
