With all of the technology that kids may be exposed to today, their own book is still one of their most treasured possessions.
Through a Rotary Foundation grant, the Rotary Club of LaGrange teamed up with the United Way, Success by 6 and the Troup County school system to provide each Troup County pre-kindergarten student with a new book, tucked neatly in its own book bag.
With its large print and bold, colorful illustrations, the book, “WOW! School!” by Robert Neubecker, is a favorite among the pre-K through first graders. The children love to follow Izzy, the book’s main character, through her first day of school. The book highlights and incorporates an element of sheer excitement in the components of a typical day at school for a young child.
With the books carefully counted and placed in bright blue bags, Rotarians then volunteered to deliver them to the different early learning centers in Troup County. Upon arriving to the school the Rotarian is greeted by school personnel and then escorted to the pre-K classrooms. Before handing the books out to the students, the Rotarian has an opportunity to share the book with the class. The children get really excited when they see and recognize many of the items and scenes in the story that they have in their own classrooms.
As much as the children enjoy having a visitor share a book with them, perhaps the best part is when they are actually handed that blue bag, with that very same book, that they get to take home with them.
Reading is a activity that should be part of every child’s normal day. This annual Rotary project is just one more way that the importance of books and the skill of reading can be emphasized for Troup County’s young students and their families.
