Sutton, a junior wrestler for the Cavaliers, got a late start on the season after the football team made it to the second round of the state playoffs.
Sutton has been working his way back into wrestling shape, though, and he feels he’s getting close to where he needs to be heading into the critical stretch of the season with the area and state tournaments coming up.
On Saturday, competing in the Gary Silva Invitational hosted by LaGrange High, Sutton made it all the way through to the championship match in the 285-pound division before losing by pin.
Sutton was one of two local wrestlers to earn a spot in the finals, with LaGrange High’s Corey Morgan advancing to the final match at 170 pounds before falling.
Four other LaGrange wrestlers earned a medal by finishing third or fourth.
Sutton, a state qualifier a year ago, said he’s been working hard to make the transition from football to wrestling.
“I’m getting better every week,” Sutton said. “I’m working, getting ready for the team tournaments and our individual tournaments coming up.”
As for the weekend, Sutton said “it was a lot of great competition. With these tournaments, you get kids from all over.”
Although Sutton was the only Callaway wrestler who placed, Matthew Bucheger and Sam Mosley each won two matches and came within a victory of securing a top-four spot.
For Bucheger, Callaway coach Kurt Napier said “that was a big accomplishment. He’s definitely got better, and I was proud of him.”
Napier said Mosley is starting to excel now that he’s at his preferred weight of 152 pounds.
“He’s got to what his true weight is,” Napier said. “He’s wrestling at 152 now. I feel good about him.”
For LaGrange, the highlight was provided by Morgan, who had a terrific weekend before getting pinned in the finals at 170 pounds.
“He’s just a freshman, and 170 wasn’t easy,” LaGrange head coach Scooter Weathers said. “It was one of the toughest weight classes.”
Logan Pitts also had a successful tournament for LaGrange, finishing third at 182 pounds.
Emmanuel Mann made it to the consolation finals in the 285-pound division, but he lost by decision and finished fourth.
At 215 pounds, Devonte Williams also found himself wrestling in the consolation finals, but he was pinned and finished fourth.
At 120 pounds, LaGrange’s Jorderias Brown also lost in the consolation finals to finish fourth.
Kyler Hall, Jacob Butler and Turner Duke each won two matches for LaGrange but didn’t place.
