As the fourth period began, the Lady Cavaliers were only down by two points, and they appeared poised to possibly claim the win and move into a tie for first place in the region.
It didn’t happen.
Central-Carroll outscored Callaway 13-2 over the first four minutes of the fourth period, and the visiting Lady Lions went on to claim a 54-48 victory.
Callaway made a nice late surge to get back into the game, but it was too little too late.
Callaway (8-4 overall) fell to 4-2 in region play, while Central-Carroll (13-4) improved to 6-0 in the region.
“At the beginning of the fourth quarter, we got behind and dug ourselves in a hole,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “That made it very hard for us to get back in the game. And Central-Carroll did a good job. They got some easy baskets.”
After falling behind 11-8 after the opening period, Callaway rallied to take a 23-21 lead at the half.
Central-Carroll outscored Callaway 12-8 in the third period to take a narrow 33-31 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Lions scored the first four points of the quarter to go up by six, but Callaway’s Latasha Anderson scored with 6:40 left to make it a 37-33 game.
Central-Carroll scored the next nine points, though, to extend its lead to 46-33 with 4:15 remaining.
The Lady Cavaliers weren’t done.
Tanesha Johnson made four straight free throws to get the deficit down to nine with 3:58 left, and Monica Jackson hit a jumper and then made two free throws with 1:31 remaining to cut Central’s lead to 48-43.
The comeback stalled there.
The Lady Lions maintained at least a five-point lead until Jackson made a 3-pointer with four seconds left to make it a 52-48 game, and a Central player capped the scoring with two free throws with a second left.
“We gave a lot of effort at times, but there were a few times where I feel like we didn’t give the effort like I wanted to,” Martin said. “We have to put four quarters of basketball together.”
Callaway got a big game from freshman Zamari Hardnett, who had a game-high 21 points.
Jackson added 12 points.
The Lady Cavaliers will look to get back track Friday when they travel to Atlanta to face Correta S. King High.
