Five wrestlers from LaGrange High, three from Troup, and one from Callaway have made it through to the state finals that will be held in Macon from Thursday through Saturday.
To reach the finals, the wrestlers had to survive the state sectionals that were held over the weekend.
Thirteen combined wrestlers from LaGrange and Troup participated in the Class AAAA sectional in Pickens County, and Callaway’s Brandon Sutton wrestled in the Class AAA sectional in Ringgold.
LaGrange leads the way with five total wrestlers making it to Macon.
Devonta Williams (220 pounds) earned a fourth-place finish at the sectional, and LaGrange head coach Scooter Weathers said he did a great job of shaking off a disappointing early loss.
Weathers said he told Williams “you can go into a shell, or be the senior leader you are and come back through and get third or fourth, and he did.”
Also for LaGrange, freshman Emanuel Mann (285 pounds) was seventh, Hunter Richardson (152 pounds) was seventh, Kyler Hall (138 pounds) was eighth, and Logan Pitts (182 pounds) was seventh.
The top eight finishers in weight class advanced to the state finals.
Two other LaGrange wrestlers came within a victory of making it to Macon.
“Saturday morning, we had a chance to get seven out of eight in,” Weathers said. “And we wound up getting five in.”
For Troup, Michael Mackfield (195 pounds) led the way with a third-place finish, Adam Love (132 pounds) was sixth, and Cameron Cato (106 pounds) was eighth.
“The guys that made it have a really good chance to place at state,” Troup coach Chris Mitchem said.
For Callaway, Sutton easily qualified for the state finals by placing second in the 285-pound division in the sectional.
