They’re champions again.

After winning the Jekyll Jam tennis tournament last March, the Lady Grangers defending their title this year.

In Saturday’s championship match, LaGrange beat Columbus to cap off a 3-0 tournament run.

LaGrange’s boys’ team, meanwhile, also had a successful tournament stay with a 2-1 record.

The two-day tournament was held on Jekyll Island.

The tournament is hosted by LaGrange, and head coach Kenny Moore said it was “a fantastic time.”

“It’s a bonding experience for our team,” Moore added. “It’s sort of a payoff for the hard work that we do with the Granger Invitational and some other things we were able to do to fund that trip to Jekyll. We just had a fun time being together for the weekend.”

Moore said it was cold, but at least it didn’t rain, which is always a threat this time of year.

“We didn’t have any rain. We got it all in,” Moore said. “We had a bunch of years where it did rain.”

Both teams are having to replace some key players from last season’s team that won region championships, especially on the boys’ side.

“We had five seniors last year, so we’re totally rebuilding,” Moore said.

The Grangers are led by Emory DeLoach, the number one singles player, and veteran doubles player Richard Bryant is also back.

The girls have a number of veterans and some talented newcomers.

The players who helped the Lady Grangers win the tournament championship are Euna Oh, Jia Lee, Julia Shirley, Jordan Reese, Mary Margaret Rogers, Katie Graham, Katie Bryant, Abigail Brock and Caroline Johnson.

GOLF: The LaGrange High golf team recently lost to Carrollton 166-168.

The Grangers were led by Ryan Watts, who shot a 40.

Tripp Warren added a 41, Press Thornton shot a 43, and Lucas Blanton added a 44.

Competing for the Lady Grangers were Kennedy Pleasants, Abbey Arrington, Kylie Cofield and Madison Alford.
