Cortez Leonard made a major impact in his one and only season on the Callaway football team.

After transferring from Troup High following his junior season, Leonard was a starting safety as Callaway as a senior, and he was one of the team’s top defensive players as the Cavaliers won a region title and made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

Leonard has now turned his attention to baseball, and he’s becoming a critical part of that team as well.

Leonard has settled in nicely as a starter in the outfield, and on Thursday, he showed what he can do with a bat in his hands.

In the first inning, Leonard came through with a grand slam, and the Cavaliers didn’t look back on the way to a 14-2 victory over the homestanding Heard County Braves.

The Cavaliers improved to 4-2, and they’ll be off until Wednesday when they host Handley (Ala.) in a makeup game.

Everyone on the team got some time on the field during Thursday’s game.

“Everybody got an at-bat,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said. “We played everybody. We pretty much put every sub we had in about the second or third inning.”

The Cavaliers broke it open early.

In a first inning highlighted by Leonard’s blast, the Cavaliers scored seven runs, and the rout was on.

Hunter Heath added two hits for Callaway.

On the mound, Nick O’Berry got the start and pitched two innings, and Kevin Craft also pitched two innings.

Kane Keith finished things off with one inning of work.

“We were going to try to use a couple more (pitchers) if the game had gone a little longer. But that worked out OK,” Hubbard said. “We just wanted to make sure to get those guys out there. It’s better than throwing bullpen.”
