In the first half of Thursday’s game against Hardaway, Callaway’s Emily Shea had a great look at the net, but her shot clanked harmlessly off the left goal post.

In the second half of a scoreless game, Shea had another scoring opportunity, and she didn’t let this one pass her by.

With a little more than 21 minutes left in the game, Shea booted home the game’s first and only goal.

The 1-0 victory moves the Lady Cavaliers to 5-1.

Shea is the team’s leading scorer, and when the team gets near the opposing goal, she often ends up with the ball.

“She and Helen Lin work well together up top making plays,” Callaway head coach Kori Skinner said. “She’s also a great distributor as well. She’s a hard worker for our team.”

The Lady Cavaliers dominated the game and had numerous chances to score, but they were unable to convert in the first half and for the first 19 minutes of the second half.

When Shea finally scored, Skinner said it “was a relief.”

The victory continued Callaway’s hot start to the season.

“It’s been a good start,” Skinner said. “We’re 5-1. They’re playing well.”

Skinner said a big key to the success this season is excellent ball movement, and she was pleased with that part of the game on Thursday, even if it only resulted in one goal.

“They were passing the ball really well. It was great ball movement,” she said.

This is Skinner’s fourth season as head coach, and the program is on solid footing.

Skinner said the team’s two seniors, Casey Pruett and Emily Garrett, have provided great leadership this season.

“We’ve got two seniors. They’re working really hard,” Skinner said.

Next up for Callaway will be a Region 4-AAA home match against Jackson on Tuesday.

The Lady Cavaliers are 1-0 in region play, although they haven’t played a region match yet.

Douglass was supposed to play at Callaway earlier this week, but it forfeited because it didn’t have enough players.
