Facing Villa Rica at a rain-soaked Callaway Stadium, Troup got a late goal from Parker Hancock to walk away with a 1-0 victory.
The Tigers, who opened the season with two straight losses, improved to 4-2, and they remained 2-1 in Region 5-AAAA.
There was also a junior-varsity game on Monday, with Troup and Villa Rica fighting to a 1-1 draw.
“We decided to put on our swim trunks and get after it,” Troup head coach Peter Anderson said. “We played through the rain.”
Neither team was able to find the net until, with about four minutes to go, Hancock provided the game’s only goal.
“Parker received a pass from the defense, and took it and crossed over the left-hand side and put on in the back of the next to give us a 1-0 lead,” Anderson said.
From there, it was up to the defense to preserve the lead.
“It held up,” Anderson said. “That was the longest three minutes. They attacked, but our defense held.”
It was a banner night for Troup’s defensive players, including goal keeper Wade Anderson.
Coach Anderson also said senior Cole Littlefield had a strong defensive game.
“I have to give Cole Littlefield a lot of credit back there,” Anderson said. “He really held that defense together, and Nate Hardy and Rebar Dezayee and Jesse Lawhorn played really well in the defensive section, which allowed us to score.”
Anderson also said center fielder Tyler Webb made a big contribution to the win.
“He kind of controlled that middle for us, which took a lot of pressure off the defense,” Anderson said. “Everything was from the defense forward tonight. The rain was so awful, and then late the wind was blowing toward our goal, which was kind of scary.”
Troup will be back home on Wednesday to face Smiths Station.
There will be a girls’ game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers are 2-4, although they’re coming off a 10-0 victory over Shaw on Friday.
That win moved the Lady Tigers to 1-2 in Region 5-AAAA.
