Hills & Dales will be an exhibitor at the Southeastern Horticulture Society’s 25th Southeastern Flower Show on March 15-17, at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

This will be the third time the estate has displayed at the show in the last eight years. Their previous entries have garnered several awards.

This year’s flower show theme is “What’s Old is New Again,” highlighting both gardens and antiques. Horticulture Manager Jo Phillips said that the Hills & Dales’ exhibit goes along well with this year’s theme.

“Our display, ‘Ida’s Cultivated Earth,’ features a recreated corner of Ida’s 1928 garden,” Phillips said. “In researching Ida we discovered that she grew lots of her own vegetables and used many organic gardening techniques. With the movement toward local and organic foods we thought this was a perfect idea to fit the theme of the show.”

The centerpiece of the design includes an old workhouse/tool shed from the estate along with heirloom plant varieties of vegetables and flowers growing within a picket fence. The garden area is complemented by a chicken coop, cold frame, compost bins, Martin house and garden arbor. The display will be embellished with traditional tools and garden accessories that help recreate the garden setting during Ida Cason Callaway’s tenure of 1912-1936.

A tremendous amount of time and effort is involved in producing an award-worthy display, including planning and research, gathering and growing historically appropriate plants, collecting garden ornament and artifacts, and constructing architectural elements. The goal is to showcase the beauty of the estate and encourage visitors to come and see what LaGrange has to offer.

The Southeastern Flower Show is an annual horticulture event that promotes conservation and awareness of the natural environment through education, horticultural excellence and artistic expression. It is attended by 20,000 people and includes juried competition in landscape and floral design and horticulture, as well as speakers, floral and cooking demonstrations and a marketplace including garden related products and fine antiques.

The flower show will be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. For more information about the Southeastern Horticulture Society and this event, go to www.sehort.org.
