LaGrange High’s Cassidy Kemp found the net early and often Thursday afternoon against Smiths Station.

The senior soccer standout knocked in five goals to lead the Lady Grangers (4-5) to an 8-1 victory.

Kemp was making a bid to set the program’s single-game scoring record, but she came up a bit short.

Kemp and one other player has scored six goals in a game before.

“She’s (scored six goals) once or twice,” LaGrange head coach Rusty Cook said. “She wants to get seven and break the record.”

Kemp, who missed her junior season with an injury, has returned with a vengeance this season.

In nine games, Kemp has 16 goals, and the rest of the team has 11 goals combined.

The team’s second-leading scorer, freshman Reagan Peters, added two goals on Thursday and she has five for the season.

Cami Furgeson also scored a goal against Smiths Station, giving her four for the season.

Furgeson also had three assists, and Peters and Lauren Yates had one assist apiece.

LaGrange returns to Region 5-AAAA play on Tuesday when it visits rival Carrollton.

The Lady Grangers carry a 1-2 region record into the game.

“We have Carrollton next Tuesday, so it was good to get a win right before we go and play them,” Cook said.
