Local “Heroes” for the Three Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross are hoping to raise a grand total of $25,000 during the Heroes campaign that kicked off Thursday.
“What you do helps in so many ways,” said Connie Hensler, Red Cross executive director, told the heroes.
About 23 people from across the community have volunteered to raise $1,000 each in the next three months. Hensler said there is still time to volunteer as a hero and join the fundraising campaign.
To give the campaign a jump start, Kia Motors, which hosted the campaign kick off, gave Hensler and Red Cross board members a check for $5,000.
“You really do lead the way (when there is a disaster),” said Randy Jackson, vice president for human resources and administration.
For Mary Tucker, the disaster was personal. She lost her house – and everything in it – in a Jan. 6 fire.
“Everyone thinks their house is special, but my dad built ours,” she said.
The fire started in her bedroom while she was at work as a nurse, her career for 30 years.
“I didn’t even have any clothes, because since I was working I only had the scrubs I had on,” she said.
A Red Cross volunteer took her to get clothes and guided her through the first days after the fire. She’s now rebuilding her house.
“You mean everything to me,” she told the volunteers.
