Mr. James (Sonny) Akins, 69, of LaGrange passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at his home. Mr. Akins was born November 15, 1942 in Polk County, son of the late Chester and Frances Lewis Akins. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Mr. Akins was a self-employed contractor having formerly worked with Torrance Construction, Plymart and American Home Place. He loved fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife Joan Akins and son, Ricky Akins, both of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law, Renae and Bill Allen of Newnan; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Brandy Akins of West Point; grandchildren and their spouses, Nick and Holly Akins, Johnny Akins, Jessi and Chris Owens, Alex Byars, Josh Akins, Paige Akins, Trey Byars, Jhon Randy Akins, Payde Akins, and Luke Akins; stepgrandchildren and a spouse, Scott Brown, Ben and Stacy Allen, and Grant McDaniel; 6 great-grandchildren, Ashton and Kyle Owens, Emma and Camdyn Mardy, Trenton and Mattie Edwards; sisters and a brother-in-law, Annie Ruth Owens and Dorothy and Buzz Pendergrass; brother, Gene Akins; and special aunt and uncle, Horace and Doris Lewis; aunt, Rosa Lee Callahan, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott Akins and grandson, Robert Akins.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 Saturday at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the Rev. Mike Hornsby officiating. Entombment will be in Shadowlawn Mausoleum. The family will be at their home, and will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.
