LAGRANGE – They’ll get their fill of softball this weekend.

The Troup Lady Tigers, who opened their season with a 4-1 loss to Brookstone on Tuesday, will play five games in the Callaway Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Callaway and LaGrange will also participate in the event that will be held at the Shuford Fields complex.

The 10-team event will include two five-team pools, and there will be a championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Troup is coming off a successful 2014 season that ended with a loss to Marist in the opening round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

“You reach that point where it’s definitely time to play,” Troup coach Blair Shimandle said. “We’ve got a long season ahead. Once we get started this weekend, we’ve got a lot of games to come.”

In Tuesday’s season opener, Troup got a strong pitching performance from Hanna Lane, but the team couldn’t muster much offense.

“She definitely threw really well,” Shimandle said of Lane, who is a senior. “She hit her spots really well. She did a good job for us. Our hitting didn’t back her up.”

Troup only lost one senior from the 2014 team, so expectations are high this season.

Shimandle said the team took its foot off the accelerator a little bit last season after it knew it had a state-tournament berth in the bag.

It was Troup’s first state appearance since 2009.

“I felt like last year we got satisfied,” Shimandle said. “We got to the point where we knew we were going to state no matter what, and after that, we just struggled.”

LaGrange and Callaway have also played one regular-season game, and it was against each other.

LaGrange scored four runs in the first inning, and it never trailed on the way to a 13-5 victory.

Callaway visited Temple on Tuesday, but that game was called in the second inning because of rain.

Callaway had a 4-0 lead at the time.
