LaGRANGE — A man scheduled to stand trial for murdering another male took a last minute plea deal on Tuesday in a Troup County Superior Courtroom.

According to senior assistant district attorney Lynda Caldwell, who was the prosecutor on the case, Dominique Dechane Morris pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He was sentenced to 25 years to serve 12 behind bars.

According to the arrest warrants, Morris shot and killed DeAndre Varner inside a home in the 100 block of Brown Street on May 6, 2013, shortly after midnight.

Morris was later arrested by the LaGrange Police Department and charged with malice murder, murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm, according to the indictment against him.

The document said Morris brandished the a 9mm handgun at Varner in a menacing fashion before shooting him with it.

The District Attorney’s office was ready to proceed with a trial on Tuesday when Morris and his attorney announced they wanted to accept the plea deal instead.
