CARROLLTON – It’s a perfect start for the Troup High boys’ soccer team.
With Tuesday’s 5-1 road win over the Central-Carroll Lions, the Tigers are 3-0, and they also won a preseason game against Harris County.
In Tuesday’s game, which was played on a wet, sloppy field in Carrollton, Troup was clinging to a 2-1 lead at the half, and it dominated the second half and outscored Central 3-0.
In their four games, including the preseason game, the Tigers have scored 16 goals and given up just two goals, and one of those was an on-goal against Griffin.
“This year, we’ve done a much better job of scoring,” Troup head coach Jase Crenshaw said. “And defensively, our back four have been pretty solid.”
Against Central, Juan Herrera and Thomas Trotter both had first-half goals as Troup took a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Trotter scored again for his second goal, and Matthew Hale and Joseph Reeves also notched goals.
Defensively, Crenshaw said Alan Vazquez, Aaron Rensenhouse, Carson Wreyford and Collin Sargent each did a terrific job.
Vazquez, a junior, is the leader on the defensive end.
“He’s our main guy back there,” Crenshaw said. “It’s nice having him back there. He can clean up anything if it gets too messy.”
Matt Moore has been Troup’s goal keeper in every game this season.
Because of rain the past few days, Crenshaw said the field at Central-Carroll was in rough shape, but it was the same for both teams.
“With the rain that came through last night and it rained tonight as well, it was honestly some of the worst field conditions that we’ve had to play on,” Crenshaw said. “But both teams played on it. It was what it was.”
Troup will look to move to 4-0 when it hosts Valley at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and the game will be played at the Troup County Soccer Complex.
In Tuesday’s girls’ game, Troup lost to Central-Carroll 10-0.
