LaGRANGE — A 44-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the stomach Saturday at about 3:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Greenville Street.

The man was flown by helicopter to a Columbus hospital and was in stable condition following the incident, according to a statement from LaGrange Police.

Another man, identified by police as Billy S. Batchelor, 44, of Hill Street, was detained for further questioning, according to Senior Officer Robbie Hall of LaGrange Police.

Batchelor was later charged with aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, police said.

An eyewitness who identified herself as Ashley Pollard of LaGrange said she was at a laundromat across the street from the Budget Inn, 100 Hill St., when she saw Batchelor exit a hotel room and argue with the alleged victim in the parking lot.

“I just seen a dude come out of the hotel room and walk up to a man he was arguing with and said that he was going to kill him,” she said. “The dude (alleged victim) turned around and was like ‘what?’ with his hands. … When he put his hands out, the dude in the black shirt (Batchelor) just stabbed him in the stomach, then put the knife in his pocket and walked off like it was nothing.”

Another witness who identified herself as Glenda Earley of LaGrange said she saw the victim fall to the ground in front of a law office at 313 Greenville St. after being stabbed.

“Then he got back up and walked to the (Emmaus) shelter,” she added.

Pollard and a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, Matthew Gravitt, approached the victim and stayed with him until emergency workers arrived.
