ATLANTA — Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney Peter Skandalakis has a new title to add to his long list of accomplishments.

Skandalakis was appointed in early June to serve as a member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council of Georgia or CJCC said Charles Spahos, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council.

Skandalakis was nominated to the Council by the Department of Public Safety.

“Pete is an excellent addition to the Council,” said Spahos. “His experience and leadership in prosecution and criminal justice are unparalleled, and I know he will serve this post with great honor.”

CJCC serves as the statewide agency for criminal justice information and research, develops criminal justice legislative and executive policy proposals and serves in an advisory capacity to the governor on issues impacting the criminal justice system, explained Spahos. CJCC is also a state administrative agency that has numerous competitive grant programs.

“It is an honor and a pleasure to be nominated to serve the people of Georgia as a member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council,” said Skandalakis. “CJCC works to build consensus and collaboration in Georgia’s diverse criminal justice system, and I look forward to ensuring that those efforts are successful.”

Skandalakis is a career prosecutor who is serving his sixth term as District Attorney of the Coweta Judicial Circuit. He has spent his entire legal career in the Coweta Judicial Circuit since graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1984. Skandalakis began as an assistant district attorney, was promoted to chief assistant in 1987 and was appointed the district attorney in 1992. Later in the same year, he won a contested election and has been re-elected without opposition since then.

Skandalakis has served as president of the District Attorney’s Association of Georgia, chairman of the board of directors of the Georgia Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council for two terms and was a member of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council board of directors for an additional six years.

He has also served as chairman of Georgia’s Basic Litigation Course for New Prosecutors for 14 years, chairman of the board for a local domestic violence shelter, and has appeared as a featured speaker at prosecution and victim assistance training conferences throughout the country.

Skandalakis received a Governor’s Public Safety award for his contribution to public safety last year. Additionally, Skandalakis is a past recipient of the Georgia District Attorney of Year Award and he received CJCC’s Eagle Award for his contributions to victim services throughout Georgia.
