ATLANTA – A successful season came to a close for the Callaway High volleyball team in the opening round of the state tournament.

After finishing third in Area 5-AA, Callaway earned a spot in the state tournament against Washington-Atlanta, the number two seed from Area 4-AA.

Those two teams squared off on Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, and it was Washington-Atlanta taking the victory in straight sets.

After losing the first two sets 25-10 and 25-15, Callaway made things interesting in the third and final set.

In a back-and-forth set, it was Washington hanging on for a 35-33 victory, and that marked the end of Callaway’s season.

It was the end of road for Callaway’s five seniors, Breeanne Moncus, Alexis Garner, Chanton Robinson, Jasemine Drake and Bailie Bowles.

A talented group of underclassmen will return to anchor next year’s team.

On Thursday, the Troup volleyball team will look to keep its season alive when it visits Ridgeland in the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

Troup, which finished third in Area 5-AAAA, beat Burke County in the opening round of the state tournament last week.
