TEMPLE – The Callaway Cavaliers continued their march toward a possible perfect regular season with a 35-10 road win over the Temple Tigers on Friday.

Callaway improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Region 5-AA, and it can secure the region championship with a home win over Spencer on Friday.

Spencer, which beat Lamar County on Friday, is also 3-0 in the region.

After a scoreless first quarter, Callaway broke through in the second quarter, with Dylan Johnson tossing a 38-yard touchdown pass to Michael Freeman, and Noah Stephens made the first of his five extra points.

DJ Atkins had a long run into Temple territory to set up that score.

Moments later, Callaway recovered a fumble deep in Temple territory, and that led to a touchdown.

Once again it was Johnson hooking up with Freeman, this time on an 8-yard touchdown with 1:44 to play in the first half.

Temple answered with a touchdown of its own to cut Callaway’s lead to 14-7 and take some momentum into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Cavaliers were backed up to their own 10-yard line, but they went 90 yards for the score, with Atkins taking it in from three yards out, and the lead was 21-7 with 5:54 to play in the third quarter.

After Temple got within 11 with a field goal, Callaway capped the scoring with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Atkins had his second touchdown run of the game, and Johnson tossed a scoring pass to Braylon Sanders.
