The annual Troup County Sheriff’s annual car show is scheduled for May 6 at Pyne Road Park.
The event benefits the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home, called Pineland, outside LaGrange, and is in its eighth year.
“Every dime goes to Pineland Youth Home,” said Maj. Charles Nixon, the lead organizer of the event every year.
About 200 cars registered for the event last year and Nixon is hoping for more this year.
“Participation has increased every year,” he said. The event has raised about $50,000 for the home since it was started. They daylong event, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., includes door prizes, a live auction, food and a DJ.
Youths at Pineland are there in foster care through no fault of their own, Nixon said.
“It’s a good place,” he said. “A lot of boys are out there for a long period of time. They need all the help with can give them.”
Sheriff James Woodruff agreed.
“Last year we took the money and bought a car for the youths out there who are old enough to drive,” he said. Youths not old enough to have a license were given new bicycles. This year, the sheriff is hoping to restock the lake on the property with fish and restart some of the fishing rodeos that were held on the site in the past.
Woodruff said he appreciates his entire staff for taking part in planning and executing the car show.
“We’ve got people out there cooking, and in charge of the raffle,” he said. “It really takes everyone to pull it off.”
