LAGRANGE – Troup’s Markiya Harris held her own with the fastest runners in the state.
Harris, a freshman, made it through to the finals in the 100-meter dash at the Class AAAA state track and field meet in Rome, and she finished seventh.
Harris also made it to state in the 200-meter dash, and she was 13th in that event.
Harris was joined in Rome by teammate Marc-Anthony Dixon, who was 12th in the 100.
It was the culmination of a stellar season for Harris, who finished third in the 100-meter dash at the Region 5-AAAA meet, and she was third in the 200.
At the state sectional, Harris finished fourth in the 100, and seventh in the 200, and she qualified for the state finals in both events.
In the state finals, which was held on the Berry College campus, Harris placed seventh in the 100 with a time of 12.81 seconds.
In the 200, Harris had a time of 26.75 seconds, which was 13th best in the state.
“My goal for the year was to make it to state,” Harris said. “I did it. It was fun.”
A pair of Callaway runners made it to the state finals in Albany, and senior Braylon Sanders capped his remarkable high-school career with a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Aniya Simpson placed 10th in the 400-meter run.
