On Tuesday, the Troup County Board of Commissioners approved rezoning 208 Johnston Street from residential to commercial.

The rezoning came in response to a request from MMI Investments, LLC, which owns the property as well as 205 Johnston Street and 370 South Davis Road, where Mitchell Marine is located. According to the applicant, the property will be used as additional storage for Mitchell Marine.

The commission approval came with the condition that the property could only be accessed for commercial purposes through South Davis Road, due to concerns for the impact of commercial traffic on Johnston Street. The company’s representatives present at the meeting agreed to the condition.

One individual spoke against the rezoning due to the increased traffic between the shopping center in front of the property and Mitchell Marine, both of which are within city limits.

A hydrology study was also listed as a requirement for commercial use of the property.

The Troup County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to meet on Dec. 19 at 9 a.m. at 100 Ridley Avenue.
