The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released the identification of the deceased victims from Thursday’s police-involved shooting near West Point Lake.
According to the GBI, Sally Harrison, 68, was found dead outside of a residence on 5000 Riverside Lane in LaGrange by the Troup County Sheriff’s Department and LaGrange police officers.
Information collected from the investigation led police on a search for Harrison’s brother, Sam Burt, 65, according to a news release from the GBI.
When police located Burt, it was discovered he was holding a handgun. Police say Burt refused to comply with commands from police to drop the weapon. The news release states that early information indicates that Burt raised his gun toward police when officers fired shots at Burt, striking him multiple times.
GBI says the police performed lifesaving measures on Burt, but he died at the scene.
No officers were injured in this incident, according to the GBI. However, two dogs died in the incident and another dog was injured.
According to the GBI, the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies on both deceased individuals.
The GBI said it will continue its independent investigation and will provide the information to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
