It was a short and sweet senior-day ceremony at LaGrange Academy.
There is one senior on the LaGrange Academy softball team, Megan Allen, and she was recognized before Monday’s home game against Twiggs Academy.
Allen then went out and reached base twice while helping LaGrange Academy beat Twiggs Academy 8-0 to improve to 7-2.
Allen is part of a resurgent LaGrange Academy team that reached the GISA Class A state semifinals last season and appears poised to compete for a state title again this year.
LaGrange Academy had a few downs year after winning multiple state championships under head coach Charles Parker, but the program is on the upswing.
“I’m really just so proud of how my girls have grown over the years,” Allen said. “Even the girls before have helped create the team, and how we are today and the mentality we have. With these girls, it’s amazing playing with them.”
Allen added that “we all have classes with each other, and we’re all in clubs together. We’re very tight-knit. We’re always communicating with each other.”
Parker appreciates what Allen, who hit leadoff on Tuesday, has brought to the team.
“She comes to practice every day, and she works hard,” Parker said. “She made herself better.”
LaGrange Academy put Monday’s game away early, scoring four runs in the first inning before adding two more runs in the second.
LaGrange Academy added single runs in the third and fourth innings, and the game ended after the top of the fifth inning because of the run rule.
Amber Corley had two hits, and she also pitched four scoreless innings to get the win.
Laney Lackey had two hits with a double, and she finished things off on the mound with a scoreless fifth inning.
Kayla McBride was on base twice with a hit and a walk, Madison Petite had an RBI single, and Natalee Waddell was on base three times, reaching on two errors and a walk.
LaGrange Academy closes the regular season with road games against Flint River Academy, Twiggs Academy and Creekside Christian Academy before the GISA Class A state tournament.
