Troup High’s Michael Irvin finished in style.
In his final state wrestling championship, Irvin earned a third-place finish in the Class AAAA 285-pound division.
Irvin posted a 5-1 record at the state meet in Macon, and he won four in a row after losing his second match.
Irvin, who is also a football standout at Troup, opened with a win over Hardaway’s Mykel Williams.
In his next match, Irvin was locked in a hard-fought match with Cartersville’s Shadre Hurst, and he lost 3-2.
Irvin shook off that loss and beat North Oconee’s Ashton Hefner 3-2, and he outlasted Eastside’s Seth Martin 3-1 in the consolation semifinals.
In Saturday morning’s third-place math, Irvin topped Gilmer County’s Jacob Cruz 6-4.
Also competing at state was Kullum Irvin, Michael Irvin’s younger brother.
Participating in the 145-pound division, Irvin dropped his first match to LaFayette’s Karson Ledford before beating Flowery Branch’s Jacob Woodruff 8-1.
Irvin’s state competition ended with a loss to LaGrange’s Matt Callaway.
Also for Troup, freshman Camden Roberts (106 pounds) competed at state, and he lost both of his matches.
