Cathy Hunt has been elected to a second term to the Troup County School Board in District 5.
Hunt received 1,668 votes, or 65 percent, and her opponent Tommy Callaway received 878 votes, or 34 percent.
Hunt said Wednesday she was appreciative of the enthusiastic turnout in District 5.
“I feel really grateful that I have the opportunity to serve the school system for another term with a lot of great people by my side,” she said.
Hunt, who is a former educator, said many times while running for re-election that she wanted to continue to the momentum the school system has gained in the past three years. She said part of the reason for the positive path is TCSS Superintendent Dr. Brian Shumate.
“We have a lot of challenges when it comes to the pandemic,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to supporting him (Shumate) and getting our school system where it needs to be.”
Hunt said the collaboration of the current board and Ferrell Blair, who was elected to the District 2 seat Tuesday, will create a solid team.
“I’m looking forward to working together on a team effort that I haven’t’ felt in a long time,” she said.
This was Callaway’s second attempt at securing a school board seat, as he also ran eight years ago. Back then, he said he knew teacher morale was bad and teacher turnover was high. During this campaign, he said he wanted to continue to do more for the school system’s teachers.
Callaway couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
