For 25 years, Sue Olson has been an essential part of the city of LaGrange. 

“I have, of course, during my years as mayor had many opportunities to present many service pins,” said LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton. “I can’t think of any one more meaningful than the presentation tonight to recognize our old-time friend and city clerk Sue Olson.” 

Olson officially marked 25 years with the city in January but had to push back the celebration due to her family not being able to travel to LaGrange. 

“I want to thank my City Manager Meg Kelsey for believing in me, always encouraging me and trusting me to be the City Clerk for ‘America’s Greatest Little City’, my hometown, LaGrange,” Olson said. “I’ve worked directly with Meg for over 20 of my 25 years and she has always been there for me. Of course, I can’t go without mentioning the late Tom Hall. Mr. Hall hired me as his executive assistant in January 1995, at which time John Bell was the clerk/treasurer. These two great men trained me well. Ms. Kelsey and I grew and learned together under them, and we now make a great team. Mayor Thornton and all of my council members are absolutely the best, and I appreciate them making my job so much easier. Although I can’t give the city another 25 years, I just may be here until they run me off.”

Tuesday night her grandchild, daughter, son-in-law and other family members were able to participate in giving Olson her 25-year pin. 

“Sue is the face of the city, and had been such a great supporter for all of us at the city,” Thornton said. “Not just currently, but even in the past.”

Former Council Member Norma Tucker attended the celebration to gift Olson with roses. 

“These roses were just a small thank you for all that you have done over the years,” Tucker said. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am so proud. Thank you does not say enough to express just how much I appreciate you.” 

Olson has also worked part time in the police and information technology departments and is often referred to as the “voice of city hall.”

“Over these 25 years, she has continued to move into positions with increased responsibility,” Thornton said. “Most recently, she was promoted to city clerk and has been referred to as the voice of city hall. He responsibilities include preparation of council agendas, minutes, administrative support from the city manager, the mayor and city council members, preparation of resolutions and proclamations.” 

Olson said the best part of her job is meeting all the people who come through the city. 

“She loves helping people whether there is a question of utility bills, requesting the use of public parks or someone trying to reach the mayor,” Thornton said. “She is there with a smile to help. Her skillset has been invaluable in all areas.”  

Council Member District 1 Tom Gore said Olson has been instrumental in helping the city succeed. 

“She makes us look good, which is hard sometimes,” Gore said. “We hope to keep going for a long time to come.” 

Council member LeGree McCamey said Olson has stayed consistent in all her years at city hall. 

“You are one of the only people I know when you call city hall that you are always the same,” McCamey said. “I don’t care what it’s for, you’re always the same. No matter how big or how small, you are always the same. Thank you for being there and making us do stuff on time. You are a jewel.”
