During Monday night’s work session, the Troup County School Board discussed aging roofs at Long Cane Elementary School and Troup High School.

For Long Cane Elementary, the board discussed accepting a bid to replace the roof. At Troup, the board is in the planning stages.

Superintendent Brian Shumate recommended the school board award MEJA Construction as the contractor for the roof at Long Cane Elementary School at a cost of $404,850.

Assistant Superintendent Chip Medders said the roof was installed in 2003 and is 17 years old. He said the roof only had a 10-year warranty and right now it is dealing with leaks that result in continuous patching.

“I think the 10-year decision was probably based on finances,” Medders said. “They went with a cheaper roof in 2003, and we tried to make it last 20 years.”

MEJA had the lowest bid out of six contractors who bid on the project.

It also had the second fastest project timeframe at 31 days.

Medders said if the project is approved, MEJA would start in December. The board is expected to vote on the proposal Thursday.

The project would be paid for out of the general fund, but the school system expects a good chunk of that ($262,820) to be reimbursed via Georgia Department of Education capital outlay funding.

Shumate also recommended that the board approve Southern A&E to design a reroof project at Troup High.

Medders said he was hesitant to estimate the total cost of the project for Troup, but he said he expects the entire project to cost around $3 million.

The architect would get a certain percentage of whatever the total cost ends up being.

TCSS would expect to get a little over $1.1 million in capital outlay reimbursement to help fund the project.

The school board will vote on whether to approve the architect on Thursday.
