Motorists traveling near Commerce and New Franklin Road should expect travel delay sas the Georgia Department of Transportation begins construction at the intersection of the two streets.
According to District Three Communications Officer Penny Brooks, crews will restripe the westbound approach and create an additional southbound left turn to Georgia 1/New Franklin Road, creating dual left turn lanes. Brooks said signals at the intersection will be upgraded to remove the existing split phases.
“They’re going to change the signal timing so that eastbound and westbound phases can go at the same time,” Brooks said. “They won’t have to wait for one side to go and then another side to go.”
While the crews are active, lane closures at the intersection may be installed for their safety and efficiency.
“They are essentially redesigning the intersection,” Brooks said. “They are going to scooch some things around and stretch out the length of the lanes.”
The Quick Response project will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020 and should be completed by the end of Feb. 2021.
