Season tips off for Callaway

COLUMBUS – The Callaway Lady Cavaliers broke open a close game with a big fourth quarter to beat Northside-Columbus 47-38 on Tuesday in their season opener.

The game was tied 31-31 after three quarters, and Callaway outscored Northside 16-7 in the final quarter to win going away.

Junior guard Gabrielle Johnson, who has returned for her third season as a starter, led Callaway with 16 points.

Post player Camryn Stargell added 10 points, Niakoe Burks added nine points, and Jazmine Thornton scored six points, all in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cavaliers surged to a 13-6 lead after the first quarter, and they were ahead 26-15 at the half.

Northside controlled the third quarter, outscoring Callaway 16-5 to pull even heading into the final eight minutes.

In Tuesday’s boys’ game, a short-handed Callaway team fell to Northside 76-61.

Most of Callaway’s key players are members of the football team that will play Lovett in the second round of the state playoffs on Friday.

One key player who was there was Javontay Boddie, who had a huge night with 30 points while pulling down eight rebounds, and he had six steals and six assists.

Devin Dowell added 19 points with three rebounds, two steals and five assists, and Kaleb Salter had four points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Javen Cochran had two points, five rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots, and Natorrius Truitt had four points, five rebounds and two steals.

Kardavion Nelson contributed three points, five rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals.
