Sheridan Construction of Macon, Georgia, acquired Benchmark Contracting of LaGrange to offer growth to its clients and employees into the West Georgia market.

The business began operation under the Sheridan Construction brand Jan. 1.

On Tuesday, the construction company celebrated the expansion to LaGrange with a ribbon cutting at its office on Greenville Street.

Benchmark Contracting, founded in 2007, provides commercial, industrial and high-end residential construction services in West Georgia.

According to Chief Financial Officer Shea Smith, Benchmark’s mission of creating long-lasting relationships by building superior construction that exceeds customers’ expectations is consistent with Sheridan’s core values.

“We were introduced to the team and got to know each other,” Smith said.

“We just became a good fit. We decided to kind of get together and support them. We’ve got the resources behind us as far as bonding and support for marketing and those sorts of things.”

Lyle Daniel, founder and President of Benchmark, said in a press release that Sheridan treated them like family when at the beginning of the equitation process.

“The acquisition process has been natural the entire way,” Daniel said. “It’s exciting to know what our team can now bring to West Georgia.”

Smith said Sheridan Construction began as a family-owned business in 1947.

Now it is a 100 percent employee-owned company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, Sheridan Construction is quickly approaching its 75th anniversary.

“We do everything basically from commercial construction to residential,” Smith said. “We do a lot of institutional work. We’ll do industrial work on offices and pretty much anything commercial. We’ve done some pretty sensitive kind of projects like churches and those sort of things.”

Smith said there is no project too big or too small that they can’t do. The small jobs are just as important to them as the large contracts.

“We are excited for the opportunity to be in the area,” Smith said. “The tight knit, small-town community is why we are here. The people are what make it all worth it.”

The company’s foundational values are taking care of the customers, employees, design partners, trade contractors and community served.

“We build something for the community that will be there for generations to come,” Smith said.

“It’s more about that and investing in the community than just getting contracts and jobs. It’s more than just a transaction.”

Smith said that he looks forward to getting to know the community more and gaining repeat customers in the community that they can serve.

“We have been working together closely for more than three years and learned immediately that our company culture was remarkably similar,” Christy Kovac, President/CEO of Sheridan, said. “This acquisition is an investment in a great company and great employees and directly aligns with our strategic vision. We bring additional operational resources and bonding capacity for growth and stability. It is a win-win.”
