For the second straight year, Callaway High’s LaQuize Gilbert will get a chance to wrestle for a state championship.
A year ago, Gilbert fell short in the title match, and he’s hoping for a better result this time arouind.
Gilbert, a senior wrestling in the 170-pound division, won all four of his matches on Tuesday to advance to the championship match, and his opponent will be Ty Morris of Bremen.
Those two faced off in the championship match at the area tournament, with Gilbert getting the upper-hand.
Five other Callaway wrestlers have lost a match but are still alive in the tournament and will return home with a medal by playing sixth or higher.
Among those wrestlers is Ladarrious Williams (132 pounds), who went 3-1 on Tuesday.
This will be the second straight year Williams has placed at state after finishing fifth last season.
Alan Shuman (195 pounds) dropped his first match, but he bounced back to win his next four matches.
Jacob Miles (285 pounds) also went 4-1 on Tuesday, while JoJo Shuman (220 pounds) and Isaiah Shoemake (138 pounds) each posted a 3-1 record to get into position to medal.
Tyrus Edwards, Octavious Colton, Troy Helton, Colton Cline and Ethan Mill each competed at state.
