Last fall, LaQuize Gilbert, LaDarrious Williams and Jacob Miles helped the Callaway football team win a state championship.
Last week in Macon, those three continued their memorable 2020-2021 school year by placing at the Class AA state meet.
While Gilbert finished second in the state for the second straight year, Miles and Williams both placed fifth.
Gilbert, who was an all-state linebacker for the football team, won his first four matches in Macon before falling to Bremen’s Ty Morris in the 170-pound championship match.
After winning his first three matches, Gilbert outlasted Elbert County’s Trez White 2-1 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match where he lost to Morris 7-1.
Miles, a starting offensive lineman for the football team, had a nice run in the 285-pound weight class in Macon.
After losing his first match, Miles won four in a row before falling in the consolation semifinals to finish fifth.
Williams, who was a standout linebacker on the football team, placed fifth in the state meet for the second straight year.
Williams, who had a first-round bye, finished with a 3-2 record at 132 pounds.
Alan Shuman (195 pounds) had a stellar tournament with a 4-2 record, Isaiah Shoemake (138 pounds), Colton Cline (169 pounds) and JoJo Shuman (220 pounds) each went 2-2, and Tyrus Edwards (106 pounds), Octavious Colton (113 pounds), Troy Helton (152 pounds) and Ethan Mill (182 pounds) also participated at state.
