The LaGrange Academy Lady Warriors earned a championship shot with a 36-27 victory over St. George’s Academy in the semifinals of the Region 1-AA tournament.

Piedmont Academy will host LaGrange Academy on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the championship game, and both teams will participate in the GISA state tournament next week.

In Thursday’s game, senior guard Ivey Portis had a big game for LaGrange Academy with 13 points, and she made two 3-pointers in the second half.

Kelsey Cotton added 11 points, and Kayla McBride scored 10 points, all in the third quarter.

Laure Knight, Ellie Grace Eiler and Mackenzie Jones also contributed for the Lady Warriors, who only had six players available.

The Lady Warriors were clinging to a two-point lead midway through the third quarter when McBride and Portis made back-to-back 3-pointers, pushing the lead to 21-13.

By the time third quarter came to a close, LaGrange Academy led 21-15.

St. George’s was hanging around and was within five points when Portis made her second 3-pointer, and LaGrange Academy led 35-27 with 2:55 to play.

Portis pulled down an offensive rebound and made a free throw with 15 seconds to cap the scoring.
