Late goal lifts Grangers

A late goal by Tripp Hollstrom powered the LaGrange High boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 home victory over Auburn (Ala.) on a drizzly Tuesday night.

With a little more than one minute to play, Davis Knight delivered a pass to Hollstrom, who powered the ball past the goal keeper and into the net for the go-ahead goal.

Auburn nearly delivered the equalizing goal, but Cason Blackburn made a sensational save with 50 seconds left to preserve the lead, and LaGrange held on for the cross-state win.

Davis Knight also had a goal for LaGrange on an assist from Jacob Rogers.

LaGrange (8-4) has won five straight games, and it will attempt to improve to 7-0 in Region 2-AAAA with a home win over Kendrick.

Also on Tuesday, LaGrange’s  girls’ team rallied for a late goal to earn a 2-2 tie with Auburn.

Trailing 2-1, LaGrange’s Sam Cottle was fouled with less than three minutes remaining in the game, and Sydney Ormsby converted the penalty kick to deadlock the score.

Ormsby scored both of LaGrange’s goals.

LaGrange, which lost to Columbus last week, is in line to finish second in the region which would secure a home game in the state playoffs.

LaGrange can improve to 6-1 in the region with a home win over Kendrick on Wednesday.

On Monday, LaGrange’s teams earned road wins over Carver by the same 10-0 score.

In the boys’ game, Davis Knight and Tripp Hollstrom led the Grangers with three goals apiece, and Owen Quimbayo, Cameron Carter, Jason Recinos, William Pitts and Pearson Knight each had one goal.

In the girls’ game, Sydney Ormsby led LaGrange with three goals, Miller Williamson and Cottle had two goals apiece, and Lily Skipworth and Tatum Fritchley each had one goal.

Cottle had four assists, Maddie Gay and Ormsby each had two assists, and Williamson had one assist.

LaGrange, which lost to Columbus last week, is in line to finish second in the region which would secure a home game in the state playoffs.

GOLF: Ben Woodham shot a 94 to lead the way for LaGrange High’s golf team during a 12-team tournament at Highland Country Club on Monday.

Ty Ormsby and Jackson Dennis each shot a 101, and Rivers Partin rounded the Grangers’ scoring with a 110. Jackson Everett shot a 112 for LaGrange.

Upson-Lee’s Trey Kelly shot a 74 and was the low medalist, and Auburn’s number one team posted a score of 345 to take the team title.

Troup also competed and had three players report scores.

Kole Jennings led the way with a 110, and Karsen Pearson and Xavier Maddox had scores of 116 and 133, respectively.

TENNIS: LaGrange High’s girls’ team saw its unbeaten season come to a close with a 3-2 road loss to Columbus High on Monday.

LaGrange got wins from Sydney Edelson at number one singles, and Adeline Lanier at number three singles.

LaGrange (13-1) will likely get another shot at Columbus in the Region 2-AAAA tournament in April.

Also on Monday, LaGrange’s boys’ team lost to Columbus 4-1.

LaGrange’s lone winner was Pierce Manning at number one singles.
