The Callaway Lady Cavaliers are hoping home-field advantage pays major dividends.
Callaway, which finished second in Region 5-AA, will host Banks County in the opening round of the state soccer playoffs on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The winner will advance to the second round to play Therrell or Model.
“We’re hosting Banks County, and if we come out and do what we need to, and we’re driven and goal-oriented, I think we have a chance to go to the second round,” said Callaway head coach Shonna Yawn. “We’ll have to fight all the way.”
Callaway earned the number two spot in the region with a late-season 8-1 road win over Haralson County.
After losing to Haralson County earlier in the season, Callaway bounced back in a big way in the rematch.
Now, Callaway will look to keep its season alive and advance to the round of 16 in the playoffs.
The Lady Cavaliers are especially grateful to have been able to play a full season, something that was from a given in this era of COVID-19.
“It’s been really fun,” said senior Marisa Acevedo. “I didn’t even think we’d have a full season, and now we get to go to the playoffs, and we’ve been able to have our whole season. It’s been really good.”
