The Troup Tigers have been perfect at home this season, and if they can continue that trend on Monday, they’ll be one of eight teams left standing in the Class AAAA state baseball playoffs.

Troup, which is 16-0 on its home field, will host Perry in a best-of-three series in the second round of the playoffs.

They’ll play a doubleheader on Monday at 4:30 p.m., and if needed, a third and deciding game would be played on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the series will advance to the third round to play either Druid Hills or North Oconee.

It has been a spectacular season for Troup (27-3 overall), which set a program record for wins in a season with a first-round victory over New Hampstead.

Troup wasn’t challenged against New Hampstead, winning both games by the same 15-0 score.

As has been the case throughout the season, the pitching and defensive was exceptional, and everyone on the team contributed to the wins.

It is, first-year head coach Tanner Glisson stressed, a true team that doesn’t rely one or two players to lead the way.

“I think we could probably name about five or six people (as the top player),” Glisson said. “They’re just good ballplayers that play very well as a unit, and play together. And really and truly, we’re young, when you talk about all the sophomores. Our one through four batters are all coming back next year. All of our pitchers except for Ethan Morton are coming back, so we’re in a good position.”

Pitchers Daniel Martin, Devon Murphy and Brett Haynes shut New Hampstead down, and players up and down the lineup contributed to the offensive onslaught.

Josh McDonald hit a home run in game one, his third straight game with a homer, and Morton had a four-hit effort in game two.

Reed Morris, Tre Mosley, Colton Webb, Hunter Kitchens, Mason Atkinson, Will Keeter, Dwartney Wortham, Martin and Murphy also got it done offensively.

Whatever happens the rest of the way, it has already been an ultra-successful season, and senior catcher Colton Webb said the spring has “flown by.”

“It hasn’t felt like we’ve played 30 games yet,” Webb said. “That 27 (wins) came quick We’re just taking it day by day, and having the most fun we can.”

While Troup earned its playoff spot by finishing first in Region 2-AAAA, Perry is the second-place team from Region 4-AAAA.

Perry split its first two playoff games with Cairo before winning the third and final game 10-4.
