1948-2022
Ms. Dorothy Owen McLeod, 73, passed away after a brief illness, on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Georgia.
A lifelong resident of LaGrange, Owen was born Aug. 24, 1948, to the late James Alexander McLeod and Dorothy Owen McLeod. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1966 and received the Senior Superlative of “Wittiest Girl” from her graduating class.
Later in life, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from LaGrange College and worked for 30 years as a Registered Nurse at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center before retiring in October 2021.
Aside from her family, nursing was Owen’s passion. Throughout her esteemed career she received numerous honors and awards, was well known for the love and enthusiasm she showed her patients, their families, and her coworkers. She was also known for the way she made a difference in the lives of everyone she encountered. Owen will be remembered as kind, gentle, easy, bright, and beautiful. She was able to see the good in everyone she met and was never judgmental nor mean. She was never in a hurry and never forgot to make someone’s day a little brighter with her presence.
Owen loved her McLeod Scottish heritage, music, and flowers. She lovingly created many beautiful flower arrangements for people all over LaGrange. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a past member of the Ivy Garden Club, and a Charter Member of the Junior Service League of LaGrange. A Mother to Ida and Charles, and “Momo” to her five grandchildren, which were her pride and joy, and she was overjoyed to watch them grow and flourish until the end. Owen’s legacy is one of love, enthusiasm, and kindness that will live on not only through her children and grandchildren, but ultimately through everyone she knew. As in one of her favorite songs, “Call Me The Breeze,” she wanted everyone to feel “right at home” and because of Owen’s presence on earth, we live in a better world and do feel right at home.
Survivors include her daughter, Ida Solomon Durand; son, Charles Owen McLeod (Meg); grandchildren, Dorothy McLeod Durand, Joanna Daniels Durand, Render Whitfield McLeod, Stiles Walton McLeod, and Sig Owen McLeod all of LaGrange; sister, Sally McLeod Wood of Newnan, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
