Gardner Newman Middle School nurse named TCSS Nurse of the Year

Garden Middle School nurse Ivy Burton was named the 2021-2022 School Nurse of the Year for the Troup County School System, according to a press release.
Burton is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with 15 years of nursing experience and four years as a TCSS school nurse.
Burton was chosen for going above and beyond her duties and responsibilities of taking t care of students at Gardner Newman Middle School, the release stated.
“I feel humbled. I’m so thankful for all my fellow school nurses for their support and friendship, and it is truly a team effort,” Burton said.
The purpose of this recognition is to annually honor one School Nurse of the Year who has demonstrated excellence in school nursing practice and leadership in school health.
Suggested Guidelines for School Nurse of the Year involve having at least two years of experience as a school nurse, be currently practicing as a school nurse and show evidence of showing excellence in school nursing practice. More than 50% of a nominee’s time should be spent in direct care, according to the release.
Burton was announced as the School Nurse of the Year on Wednesday, which is National School Nurse Day. May 6-12 is also celebrated as National Nurses Week.
“Not only do they tend to the medical needs of students, but they provide guidance and counseling for our students and families in maintaining healthy and productive lifestyles. All of this assists our teachers and staff in improving student achievement,” Dr. Brian Shumate, superintendent of Troup County Schools, said.
