Hogansville community opens garden on first day of summer

HOGANSVILLE – The Hogansville community celebrated the grand opening of its revitalized community garden, Heart & Soil of Hogansville, Tuesday.
The garden, located on the grounds of the Hogansville Active Life Center on Church Street, was the result of several sponsors and supports from throughout the Troup County community who donated items like soil, seeds and tools.
“[The garden] is an interactive community project,” said Stephanie Culver with the UGA Troup County Extension. “And now as we have an opportunity, almost out of necessity to do this and bring something to the community that will connect us. This one began and is growing with the intention of being very much a joint project, encouraging participation and involvement of any individual or organization, who is interested in learning about growing their own food, using sustainable methods, and also creating a beautiful space as a personal haven.”
A spiral herb garden in the garden’s center was designed and built by Wanda Lowe, a retired nurse and native resident of Hogansville. The spiral was inspired by professional landscape designer, Sandra Jonas, another Hogansville resident, using Permaculture aspects suggested by local Master Gardener, Patrick Bexton.
Overlooking the garden is a metal hummingbird, a nod to the city’s hummingbird festival, made by local artists Mitch Kernodle and Leah Jeffery of Eagle River Forge in Hogansville.
The garden not only contains vegetables, fruits and flowers but several shaded sitting area, one of which includes a rock checkerboard. Culver said Chatty LaGrange Woman painted over 60 small rocks scattered throughout the garden.
Hogansville Active Life Director Renay Fannin said future plans will include expanding the garden into some of the undeveloped parts of the property so new plants and food can be grown.
