The Troup County Board of Education will hold a listening session Monday, June 27, 2022, to hear opinions from the community on the possibility of renaming West Point Elementary School.
The purpose of the listening session comes after board members received a request from West Point City Council to consider renaming the school after Zelma Brock. Brock, a former assistant principal at West Point Elementary, passed away in October 2021.
Per board policy, any school name change requires a public hearing. Cathy Hunt, TCSS School Board Chair, emphasizes school board members are only coordinating the session and would be there only in a listening capacity.
No feedback will be provided on any of the comments made. A decision will be made at a later date.
The listening session will be at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of West Point Elementary School, located at, 1701 East 12th Street, West Point, Georgia.
At 6 p.m., the board will additionally hold a public hearing regarding the millage rate.
TCSS is not proposing an increase to the current millage rate of 18.85. If the existing, real property remains the same value, you will see no change in tax value for school purposes.
