1936 – 2022

Mr. Vernon George Schmidt, 85, was called home to his heavenly father, July 27, 2022. He was born Sept. 25, 1936, to the late Harm and Ella Peterson Schmidt Williams in Raymond Minnesota and was a baptized and confirmed member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City, Minnesota. He attended Raymond Public School, attended Morris Agricultural School, and managed the family 325 acre farm. After meeting and marrying his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Frikke in 1957, they were blessed with 5 children. He worked in sales for a number of years and then in 1984, they relocated to LaGrange where he started Vern’s Home Repair.

In 1985, he helped found the Covenant Reformed Church with Robert J. Dodds, IV as Pastor. Since then, this congregation became Covenant Presbyterian Church with A. Boyd Miller, IV as Pastor. Vernon loved yard work of any kind and definitely had a green thumb. He had the ability to repair most anything from engines to furniture. All who knew him were well acquainted with his dry humor and teasing. He could sit with people for hours and talk, but he was also a good listener. Mr. Schmidt never met a stranger, but was a friend to everyone. He has definitely enriched countless lives, not only in friendship, but also in sharing his confidence in his Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Schmidt is preceded in death by his son, Kyle Schmidt; his brothers, Orville Schmidt and Dennis Schmidt; his sister, Alvina Schmidt.

Mr. Vernon Schmidt is survived by his wife, Dorothy Schmidt; his children, Gwen Rushforth (Ken), Renae Aspinwall (Jim), Mark Schmidt (Sandi), and Denise Fannon (Terry); daughter in law, Dawn Coppes (Keil); his sister in law, Jan Schmidt; his grandchildren, Brittney Miranda (Carlos), Ryan Rushforth (Lona), Andrew Aspinwall, Jessica Pritchett (Joshua), Brett Schmidt, Kelsey Velez (Gabe), Heather Robeson (Isaac), Caleb Schmidt, Luke Schmidt, and Jackson Fannon; his great grandchildren, Bryson Pritchett, Halie Pritchett, Liam Rushforth, Grayson Schmidt Velez, Dakota Bogue, Hunter Bogue, Madison Bogue, Otto Aspinwall, Owen Rushforth, Noah Pritchett, Ezra Robeson, Sebastian Miranda, Reina Schmidt, Lilly Robeson, and Beckham Velez. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they make their way through this very challenging time.

The funeral service will be held at Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until service time on Sunday. The committal service will directly follow the funeral and will be held at Meadoway Gardens in LaGrange. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mr. Vernon Schmidt to the Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Program, 39 S. Highland Blvd, LaGrange, Georgia 30241.
