On Tuesday, the Troup County School System hosted a Back to School Kickoff event at the LaGrange High School athletic facility. From Troup High to Lone Cane Middle to Hillcrest Elementary, every school had staff members present for a morning of school spirit before school officially begins this Friday.
“We haven’t been able to do this for the last couple of years because of COVID-19. I wanted to create energy and make people feel like they are a part of a large team, a system. Each school has its own school spirit, its own thing, but ultimately we all work for one school system,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Shumate said. “I wanted this to be a unifying event for everybody. If the staff is unified, the kids will feel it.”
Among those present was Lone Cane Middle School’s newest assistant principal, Traviera Sewell. Sewell is excited and looks forward to beginning her first year as an assistant principal to the school.
“We have some really big plans, and I’m excited to support our teachers, kids and make some more improvements,” Sewell said. “I’m really excited to build more relationships and get the job done.”
Toward the end of the festivities, Callaway High’s choir performed “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent.”
“It’s our first full year all together at the high school. So, we have a lot in store and I am so excited to see what this group can do because the sky is the limit,” Samantha Cotton, Callaway High’s choir director said.
Shumate said he encouraged parents to be involved in their student’s education.
“We need parents at home talking to their kids every night about what they did in school that day,” Shumate said. “If you can’t get answers, email the principal, these folks are very responsive, and we’ll get your kids the support they need.”
