Earlier this week, the LaGrange Police Department and Troup County Sheriff’s Office led active shooting training with the staff at Callaway High School.

The training in itself would’ve been alarming 20 years ago, but now it’s normal procedure. Unfortunately, it’s 2022 and teachers, administrators and faculty members in general have to be prepared in case a crazed person decides to try to inflict harm on a school or its students.

And with the Ulvade shooting just a few months ago and the sentencing trial ongoing for the Parkland, Florida school shooter, there’s a lot for parents to think about as they send their children back to the classroom Friday.

However, we think parents should sleep easier knowing that the LPD and TCSO are constantly training on active shooter situations, and TCSS employees (as demonstrated in the training) have been trained on numerous scenarios. Our law enforcement has also shown that even bogus threats are handled very seriously.

Of course, none of us believe that nothing like that will ever happen here. We hope and pray it doesn’t. But it’s still important to be trained and ready, just in case.
