After 17 years, the Troup County News has closed, citing economic circumstances in a story that published in Tuesday’s edition of the paper.
“With a heavy heart we must announce, effective today, Troup County News is closed for business,” the newspaper wrote across its top banner.
“Thank you to all of those who have supported us over the years. It has been a privilege to be able to report the news in this community.”
The story describes the history of the TCN, saying it was founded by Judy and Eddie Murphy in 2005 as a free circular, but in the years ahead it grew into a newspaper with three editions per week. The TCN was currently producing e-editions on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Judy Murphy led the paper for seven years and passed away in 2012. Al Wyche, a friend of the Murphys, bought the newspaper and owned it for the next decade.
Wyche died on June 22, and his wife, Mary Anne, and daughter, Rebecca Kelly, have decided to shutter the paper so the family can focus on other endeavors.
