The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has debunked a hoax being shared around social media about an alleged serial killer in LaGrange and Hogansville.
The sheriff’s office warned that social media posts indicating that a “serial killer or abductor” was hunting in LaGrange and Hogansville by using a truck with LED lights to strike women while they are driving alone and abducting them when they stop.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Stewart Smith confirmed that the Troup County Sheriff’s Office has no such case under investigation.
Near exact posts have circulated throughout the country via social media — sometimes going viral — with little changes other than the name of the city involved or the photo. Smith did not recognize the individual in what appears to be a booking photo that was shared with the local post.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office warns to always verify posts seen on social media before resharing in order to reduce the spread of false information.
